the last mile is the least crowded 🤔

Results aren't linear. Whether you're going to the gym, learning a new skill, or just trying to figure out how to love yourself, results are (almost?) never linear.

As Seth Godin has pointed out, if your bike tire needs 35 PSI, it's the air just around 35 PSI that makes the most difference. It may even be practically flat at 20 PSI.

When you're going to the gym, you get major strength gain the first few times you go. This isn't from your muscles, but rather from your nervous system learning how to better use the muscle you already have. After that, your strength gain slows a lot because it requires your body to actually build new muscle.

But there are two patterns I've noticed:

  1. The stands are full of people with opinions who've never actually done anything.

  2. The last mile is the least crowded. A lot of people start, get to good enough, and then stop.

My two takeaways:

  1. starting is key

  2. persistence is pretty important too.

If you can't do both, don't worry, start with 1, we all do. At some point you may feel ready to bump to 2. And if you never do? That's okay too.

You're in the race. You're LIVING. That's worth celebrating.

Much love,

Paul
