Balance May Be The Key To Everything 🔑

I had a discussion with my wife just after our first kid was born.

I told her I want to teach our son about moderation - including that even moderation should be taken in moderation. It’s fun to over-eat sometimes. I’ll never forget her response.

She turned to me, one eyebrow raised. 🤔

“Paul, you overeat every single night - until you’re not feeling good.”

Worse, it was true. It was one of those moments where I didn’t need someone to sugar coat the truth. I just needed the plain truth - that something was out of whack for me. That I wasn’t balanced.

Two of the analogies I’ve used are blueberries, bicep curls and bench press.

Blueberries are delicious and good for you. Bicep curls and bench press are excellent exercises. But if your diet was 100% blueberries, how good would you feel? If your workouts were only bicep curls and bench pressing, you wouldn’t be healthy - you’d be walking around with your shoulders caved in and your arms curled, like some gorilla or monkey (for whatever reason, I think you’d probably say hi to your friends like “yo bra” 😬🤷‍♂️).

Life is a series of moments, and the balance between focusing on long term goals and living in the moment is a hard one to strike.

But as I’m learning more, this balance is emerging as one of the most essential pieces.

What about you? Do you fall in the YOLO camp or are you focused on the long term? Where on the spectrum do you sit?
