my surprise - EQ-i 2.0 emotional intelligence assessment

 

I was surprised, and I wasn't sure what to do about it. πŸ€” I have always considered myself a good problem solver. I'm a smart guy, and I believe I can figure out complex problems - it's one of my strengths.​

So when I was assessed using the EQ-i 2.0 emotional intelligence assessment and Problem Solving was my lowest score, I was pretty darn surprised!

The EQ-i 2.0 model itself is quite comprehensive. There are 5 composite categories, with each of them having 3 subscales.  The 5 main composite categories are: Self-Perception, Self-Expression, Interpersonal, Decision Making, Stress Management. If you're interested in the subscales (plus a short explanation of each), I've included a snippet from my assessment explaining it all at the bottom.

So to get 20 scores total (each composite and subscale) and to have Problem Solving (which is one of the subscales in Decision Making) ​be my lowest - well I was a bit surprised.

I got on the phone with my EQ-i coach and we had a conversation that went something like this:

Him: "So, did you get a chance to read the report?"

Me: "Hey, what's up with this - how is my problem solving score so low?"

Him: "You seem surprised. What surprises you about it?"

Me: "Well, I'm good at problem solving! I always have been. It should be higher."

Him: Mmm-hmmm.

Me: "Maybe the assessment doesn't work right, or doesn't work for me."

He just smiled. 

In retrospect, I wonder how many times he's heard that. πŸ˜¬πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜‚

Me: "So, why is it low?"

Him: "Let's take a look at the scores and see how the assessment came to that score."

See, the Problem Solving subscale isn't just pure mental computational power - it's actually how you solve problems once your emotions are involved and recognizing how they effect your decision making process. So he pulled up a few questions that go into the problem solving score and we talked through them. 

Sure enough, there was room to grow. β€‹πŸ‘

I've been able to experience this situation on the other side too.

Last week I completed my certification in providing this assessment, and part of the certification process was me coaching some of the other participants on their own results. And the sessions were fantastic. I still did some of my regular coaching that I've been mastering over the years (and that I love so much), but the report allowed us to dive in at a deep level right from the get-go. ​It was exciting! πŸ˜ŠπŸ€“
