Making space for others helps make space for yourself
I co-lead a fantastic workshop yesterday with the amazing Kara Hardin. It was for lawyers to manage parental burnout and perfection.
Kara said something interesting that I wanted to share with you.
We had arranged for breakout sessions, and while we were gathering after the first breakout, Kara asked us to close our eyes and just sit with the feelings we had from talking with the other participants.
How many of you feel heard? she asked.
Hands went up. Heads were nodding.
Even though a lot of you didn't get to talk, she said, you still feel heard because you made space to hear others. Making space for others helps you make space for yourself.
She was right.
I was in the breakouts participating. As it was my workshop, I wasn't really sharing - I was just making space for others. And I felt heard.
I felt like I belonged.
And that's powerful.
What opportunity to belong are you missing under your nose?
