“Taking Instructions” Roleplay
junior
Instructions:
Treat this as if it was a real file that you were receiving instructions for (though you can forget about matter number requests, etc.). Ask questions, take notes, etc. Know what you need to provide and when it needs to be provided.
Be thorough. There are a few key pieces of information that the partner has “forgotten” (or assumed you already knew) but will reveal if you ask the right questions. What would you need to know to set you up for success?
You really want to go to the meeting with Warren next Thursday. Try to get invited.
You really want to go to the all-party meeting on Friday. Try to get invited.
Prior Work
The draft agreement was the first work you’ve ever done for the partner, and you don’t know what the partner thought of it. Truthfully, you were a bit slammed on some other things and you would have preferred to take more time but you thought you did okay.
The Current Task
Now something has gone wrong and there’s going to be an all-parties negotiation next week. You know the partner needs you to write a memo, and you’re about to receive instructions now. You’d like to impress this partner.
You haven’t had a lot of client facing work yet and you’d like to attend the meeting with Warren, and also the meeting with the other parties. It all sounds exciting.
Timing
You’ve got some fun and relaxation planned for this weekend that you’d prefer not to cancel, and you have no idea how long this memo will take, so you’d like as much time as possible to work on it.
